BREEAM Demolition & Dismantling

Demolition as a start for circular building

Whereas traditional demolition means the end of an old building, circular demolition means the start of a new building. BREEAM-NL Demolition & Dismantling encourages this, and much more. Certification according to this method is a powerful signal that you take sustainable demolition and dismantling seriously.

In broad terms, this method pays attention to:

  • Circularity by reusing materials to the highest possible quality – upcycling instead of recycling.
  • Ensuring the health and safety of employees and local residents during demolition and dismantling.
  • Minimising nuisance to the surrounding area by limiting dust, noise and odour during demolition and dismantling.
  • Protection of the environment by reducing energy and water consumption, no pollution and limiting ecological damage.

Dutch Green Building Council has laid down the method in an officially recognised assessment guideline. This describes the certification process, who has to do what, and what the sustainability requirements (=credits) are. The more credits achieved, the higher the final BREEAM score – ranging from one to five stars, from sustainable to highly sustainable.

If you have plans for sustainable demolition and dismantling, we can:

  • Provide information on the method. How does it work? What are the benefits? What do you have to do? Who does what?
  • Prepare a quick scan showing what the potential demolition score is. And, what opportunities there are to increase the score.
  • Managing the certification process, from initiative to certificate.
