On February 20 in 2018, the Leiden University Real Estate Department obtained the BREEAM certificate Demolition and Dismantling, level Excellent. This concerns the certificate for the preparation phase. The obtained score is 82,04%. C2N has fulfilled the role of BREEAM Assessor for the achievement of the BREEAM certificate.

The total demolition work includes the preliminary demolition, asbestos removal and subsequent total demolition (and site work) of four different buildings of the Gorlaeus complex (High-rise, LCP Building, Cluster Building and Solvents Warehouse), located at Einsteinweg 55 in Leiden. Moreover, the debris is broken on site and thus certified as a building product without transport. This sustainable demolition certainly contributes to the pursuit of a circular economy.

Leiden University is at the heart of society and wants to contribute to a sustainable society. Also in its real estate policy, and thus in the construction of the new Science campus, the university strives for sustainability. This starting point was prominently visible in the tender for the demolition work, which was carried out by Beelen. Leiden University thus demonstrates that it is serious about its sustainability ambitions.
